Nepean Hospital Prefabricated Services Riser

Scope: Structural design of fire-rated external mechanical services risers to facilitate installation and boost the capacity of an operational hospital
Design Achievements:
- Prefabrication allowed for riser installation within a day
- Riser was lifted and rotated safely from horizontal to vertical, then lifted into position over an operational hospital
Design Considerations:
- Anchoring to the existing building whilst facilitating movement (inter-storey drift) in a seismic event
- Bridging different fire compartments within the hospital, the riser design needed to resist both an internal and external fire source.
Project Features:
- The riser was lined with preinstalled SpeedPanel walls on two sides to facilitate installation, while intumescent paint was used to achieve the structural performance of the steel under fire
- This riser is one of the largest and heaviest prefabricated risers we have completed, with a lifted mass of 15,000kg and a height of 16.3m
