Project constraints often get a bad rap—but at KUSCH, we see them as an opportunity to innovate.
When tasked with designing the structure for a new school, we were faced with a non-negotiable constraint: construction had to be completed before the start of the school year. Conventional construction methods couldn’t meet this timeline, and local prefabricated building manufacturers didn’t have the capacity to deliver at short notice.
That’s when we looked at the problem differently.
We discovered that local steel fabricators had ample availability to produce container-sized steel modules—quickly. Our team designed the building structure as a series of transportable modules, prefabricated off-site and delivered to site ready to go. Once onsite, conventional trades—electricians, plumbers, ceiling and cladding installers—could complete their work without delay.
This hybrid prefabrication approach blended off-site manufacturing with traditional construction workflows. It tapped into available local resources and shaved approximately 10 weeks off the construction program, allowing the project to meet its deadline.
The result? A high-quality, efficiently built school delivered on time—without compromising design intent or functionality.
Have a tricky project constraint? Let’s turn it into an opportunity.
